A restless man
I’ve known Mario Moita’s work for quite some time. He is one of those artists who manage to surprise us by his amazing growth due to his intellectual and aesthetic concerns. Together with a fine technique his voice has grown enriching itself with new tones, which allows him to reveal his talent in a fascinating way.
Mario Moita is not only an excellent singer, he is a restless man who doesn’t settle for what he has already conquered or accomplished. Mario is continuously researching and trying to develop new works. By doing so, he is constantly renewing himself. He never feels satisfied with the trodden paths - he always claims for more, as if his thirst for new ways, creativity, and new references is the essence of his life work. I believe that this is the most important purpose of art, of any art.
Once again Mario is taking us through that road where he challenges himself and those who follow him, thus he continues to consolidate a career whose dignity, quality and value is becoming more and more appreciated by many people.
Francisco Moita Flores (Portuguese writer)
Mario Moita was born in Alentejo, Portugal. Since early in life he revealed his aptitude for music. With his beautiful voice, when he was only eight years old, he won the gala for young performers at the city of Evora. At the age of ten he performed before 3,000 people in his hometown, at the annual festivities of Reguengos de Monsaraz. After that he began his piano studies in Evora’s Music Conservatory with Prof. Maria de Lourdes Horta. Later, Mario had the good fortune to meet the pianist Furtunato Murteira, who was a contemporary of the great fado composer Alberto Janes (also from the city of Reguengos de Monsaraz), who left him all his estate of fado music scores for piano (played the first score of the famous fado “Foi Deus”).
In 1990 Mario went to the University of the Azores to study Zootechny. At that time he also founded a musical group that would lead to the Tuna “Sons do Mar”. Two years later returned to his native Alentejo and established the band “Six Tetos”.
In 1993 participated in the TV program “Chuva de Estrelas” at the Portuguese TV station SIC, known by its romantic tendencies. In 1995 Mario initiated his work as a pianist at the magnificent Castle of the Holy Queen Isabel, city of Estremoz - a beautiful 5 star hotel in the city’s castle.
Instead of the common way of fado accompanied by guitar, Mario devoted himself to fado at the piano, inheritance from his master – the pianist Fortunato Murteira. Mario Moita learned in Japan with his friend - the historian Ito Genjiro, that the best was to transmit not "just" music, but to associate it with the culture and the magnificent history of Portugal.
In 2003 Mario Moita entered a new stage of his life. For that he represented Portugal in hundreds of music festivals and theaters around the world. Mario becomes global.
In our days Mario owns an incredible resumé, full of travelling and television appearances. He performed in more than 30 countries - from Romania to Estonia or Poland to Japan. Actually he spends more than half of the year in Brazil, where he’s quite liked by the media, including by Jo Soares, who has invited him several times to his famous TV talk show.
